ในการเปรียบเทียบ Adverb นั้น เราแบ่งออกเป็น 3 ขั้น คือ

1. Positive Degree คือ การเปรียบเทียบในขั้นที่เท่ากันหรือเหมือนกัน มีวิธีการใช้ดังนี้

as + adv. + as

He ran as quickly as a tiger.        (เขาวิ่งเร็วเหมือนกับเสือ)
Peter plays tennis as well as Billy.        (ปีเตอร์เล่นเทนนิสเก่งพอๆ กับบิลลี่)
Tom works as effectively as Tim        (ทอมทำงานมีประสิทธิภาพเท่ากับทิม)

the same as

I arrived at the same time as Sam.    (ฉันมาถึงเวลาเดียวกันกับแซม)
Just do the same as me.            (แค่ทำให้เหมือนกับฉัน)

not as + adv. + as

I don’t play sports as often as you.    (ฉันเล่นกีฬาไม่บ่อยเท่าคุณ)
David does not write as neatly as Mary does.  (เดวิดเขียนไม่เรียบร้อยเท่าแมรี่)
Tonight the stars don’t shine as brightly as they did last night. (คืนนี้ดวงดาวไม่ส่องแสงจ้าอย่างคืนที่ผ่านมา)

2. Comparative Degree คือ การเปรียบเทียบในขั้นกว่า ใช้เปรียบเทียบกับสิ่งสองสิ่ง หรือคนสองคน มีมีวิธีการใช้ดังนี้

      1. adverb ที่มีพยางค์เดียว ให้เติม ~er (แล้วตามด้วย than)

fast => faster
high => higher

She threw the ball higher than he did.    (เธอโยนลูกบ้านได้สูงกว่าที่เขาคิด)
I work harder than you.        (ฉันทำงานหนักกว่าคุณ)

      2. adverb ที่มี 2 พยางค์ขึ้นไป ให้ใส่ more นำหน้า (แล้วตามด้วย than)

quickly => more quickly
slowly => more slowly

*ยกเว้น early => earlier

He drives more slowly than I.        (เขาขับรถช้ากว่าฉัน)
Dogs eat more greedily than cats.    (สุนัขกินมูมมามกว่าแมว)

      3. การใช้รูปขั้นกว่าในสำนวนต่างๆ

สำนวน (ยิ่ง… ก็ยิ่ง…)
The sooner we leave, the sooner we’ll get there.
(ยิ่งพวกเราออกเร็ว ก็ยิ่งไปถึงที่นั่นเร็ว)

สำนวน (…มากขึ้นเรื่อยๆ)
The ball was rolling faster and faster down the hill.
(ลูกบอลกลิ้งลงเขาเร็วและเร็วขึ้นเรื่อย)

3. Superlative Degree คือ การเปรียบเทียบในขั้นสุด เป็นการเปรียบเทียบกับจำนวนที่มีอยู่ทั้งหมดว่าอะไรเป็นที่สุด มีวิธีการใช้ดังนี้

      1. adverb ที่มีพยางค์เดียว ให้เติม ~est

fast => fastest
late => latest

Of the three boys, Dan played the piano fastest.
(ในเด็ก 3 คนนั้น แดนเล่นเปียโนได้เร็วที่สุด)

      2. adjective ที่มี 2 พยางค์ขึ้นไป ให้ใส่ most นำหน้า

fluently => the most fluently
clearly => the most clearly
*ยกเว้น early => the earliest    

My teacher explained this lesson most clearly.
(คุณครูของผมอธิบายบทเรียนนี้ได้เข้าใจที่สุด)

adverb ต่อไปนี้เมื่อเป็นขั้นกว่าและขั้นสุดจะเปลี่ยนรูปไปเลย ดังนี้

    Henry could jump furthest.            (เฮนรีสามารถกระโดดได้ไกลที่สุด)
    You like him more than me.        (คุณชอบเขามากกว่าผม)
    What did you enjoy the most?        (คุณชอบทำอะไรมากที่สุด?)
