เราใช้ both/either/neither เพื่อกล่าวถึงของสองสิ่งหรือคนสองคน โดยแต่ละคำนั้นมีความหมายและวิธีการใช้แตกต่างกัน ดังนี้

both = ทั้งคู่, ทั้งสอง
either = อย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง
neither = ไม่ทั้งสอง

*both ตามด้วย V.พหูพจน์ ส่วน either/neither จะตามด้วย V.เอกพจน์เสมอ

both + N พหูพจน์

Both children are happy.            (เด็กทั้งสองคนมีความสุข)

It was a very good tennis match. Both players played well.
(มันเป็นการแข่งเทนนิสที่สนุก ทั้งสองคนเล่นกันได้ดีมาก)

Last month I went to Tokyo and Osaka. I liked both cities very much.
(เมื่อเดือนก่อนฉันไปโตเกียวกับโอซาก้ามา ฉันชอบทั้งสองเมืองมากๆ เลย)

Hold it in both hands.            (ถือด้วยสองมือ)

both of + Pronoun (พหูพจน์)

I like both of those pictures.        (ฉันชอบรูปพวกนั้นทั้งคู่)
Both of my grandparents are farmers.    (ทั้งปู่และย่าของฉันเป็นเกษตรกร)

There are two windows. Both of them are open.    
(มีหน้าต่างสองบาน เปิดอยู่ทั้งคู่)

Both of Alice’s sisters are married.    (น้องสาวของอลิซแต่งงานแล้วทั้งคู่)

We both come from Scotland.        (เราทั้งคู่มาจากสก็อตแลนด์)

I’ve got two brothers. They’re both doctors.    
(ฉันมีพี่ชายสองคน ทั้งสองคนเป็นหมอ)

either และ neither

Would you like tea or coffee? You can have either.
(คุณจะดื่มชาหรือกาแฟ? คุณเลือกได้อย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง)

A: Either. I don’t mind.            (A: อะไรก็ได้, ได้หมด)
B: I don’t want either.            (B: ไม่เอาทั้งคู่)
C: Neither.                    (C: ไม่เอาทั้งคู่)

either/neither + N เอกพจน์ 

There are two ways from here to the station. You can go either way.
(จากที่นี่ไปสถานี ไปได้สองทาง, คุณจะไปทางไหนก็ได้)

You can park on either side of the street.    
(คุณสามารถจอดรถได้ทั้งสองฝั่งถนน)

Neither answer is correct.            (คำตอบผิดทั้งคู่)
Neither candidate was selected for the job.    (ผู้สมัครงานต่างไม่ได้ถูกเลือกทั้งคู่)

either of + N/Pronoun (พหูพจน์)

neither of + N/Pronoun (พหูพจน์)

I haven’t read either of these books.    
(ฉันยังไม่ได้อ่านหนังสือทั้งสองเล่มนี้เลย)

Ann has got two sisters and a brother. I’ve met her brother but I haven’t met either of her sisters.            
(แอนมีพี่สาวสองคนกับพี่ชายหนึ่งคน, ผมเคยเจอพี่ชายเขาแล้ว แต่ยังไม่เคยเจอน้องสาวสักคน)

Bob and I didn’t eat anything. Neither of us was hungry.
(บ๊อบและฉันไม่ได้กินอะไร, เราทั้งคู่ยังไม่หิว)

I invited Jack and Jill to the party but neither of them came.
