Relative Clause คือ อนุประโยคที่ทำหน้าที่เสมือน Adjective โดยตามหลัง Relative Pronoun (who, which, that, whom, whose, where, why) เพื่อบอกให้รู้ว่าสิ่งที่กำลังพูดถึงอยู่คือ สิ่งใดหรือใคร

Reduced Relative Clause

Reduced Relative Clause คือ การลดรูปของ Relative Clause โดยการตัด Relative Pronoun ออกจากประโยค หรือการตัด Relative Pronoun และเปลี่ยน Verb เป็น Present Participle (V.ing) หรือ Past Participle (V.3)

หลักการลดรูปมี 2 วิธี คือ

1. การละ Relative Pronoun (who, whom, which, that) ในกรณีที่คำนามที่ถูกขยายทำหน้าที่เป็นกรรม (Object) ในประโยค โดยการละ Relative Pronoun ทำได้เฉพาะใน Defining Relative Clause (เฉพาะเจาะจง) เท่านั้น

Examples:
Relative Clause:                This is one of the books that he gave me.
Reduced Relative Clause: This is one of the books he gave me.
*ตัด that ออกได้ เพราะ one of the books เป็นกรรมที่เขาให้

Relative Clause:                The man whom Jane loves to talk with is my close friend.
Reduced Relative Clause: The man Jane loves to talk with is my close friend.
*ตัด whom ออกได้ เพราะ The man เป็นกรรม

2. การละ Relative Pronoun โดยใช้ Participle แบ่งเป็น 2 กรณี คือ

    2.1. กรณีประธาน (Subject) เป็นผู้กระทำกริยานั้น (Active Voice) ให้ตัด Relative Pronoun ออก แล้วเปลี่ยน Verb ให้เป็น V.ing (Present Participle)

   Examples:
   Relative Clause:                The man who sits next to Lisa is my brother.
   Reduced Relative Clause: The man sitting next to Lisa is my brother.
   * The man คือประธานที่ทำกริยานั่ง จึงตัด who ออก และเปลี่ยน sits เป็น sitting

   Relative Clause:                An elephant is an animal that lives in hot countries.       
   Reduced Relative Clause: An elephant is an animal living in hot countries.
   * An elephant คือประธานที่ทำกริยาอยู่อาศัย จึงตัด that และเปลี่ยน lives เป็น living

    2.2. กรณีประธาน (Subject) เป็นผู้ถูกกระทำ (Passive Voice) ให้ตัด Relative Pronoun และ Verb to be ออก เหลือไว้เพียง V.3 (Past Participle)

   Examples:
   Relative Clause:                Most people who were invited to the party didn’t turn up.
   Reduced Relative Clause: Most people invited to the party didn’t turn up.
   * Most people เป็นประธานที่ถูกกระทำ จึงตัด who were ออก เหลือไว้แค่ invited

   Relative Clause:                The law which has been enforced is a mutual rule.
   Reduced Relative Clause: The law enforced is a mutual rule.
   * The law เป็นประธานที่ถูกกระทำ จึงตัด which has been ออก เหลือไว้แค่ enforced
