Your counsellor can be an excellent guide for you. They can tell you if you have the potential for you to pursue this path. You may not be sure of what to expect or which institute to apply to. Career counsellors are knowledgeable and understand your abilities and your passion. They don't wish to discourage you but want you to be aware of the necessary details so you can make an informed decision for yourself.
Do you have the willpower to persevere?
This program may take longer than you expect. There is a lot of research, surveys, and experiments to conduct. The research itself is tedious and time-consuming, and the experiments may or may not go as planned. You may not get the results you wish to achieve, and you may have to start all over again.
All this has to be taken into consideration before you embark on this journey. If you don't have the willpower and determination you to make it all the way to the end no matter what, you will most likely drop out of this program.
Why do you want to do a PhD?
You must question yourself, why do you want to enrol in this course?
