“About a year ago, I was invited by a friend of mine to go for lunch at a local restaurant. He actually chose it, not me, but it was very good, and it is one of the best that I’ve ever eaten in. Everything was excellent, the service, the atmosphere, the food, and obviously good company as well, so it was a perfect afternoon we spent together.
The restaurant was maybe about 5 kilometres outside of the city where we live. It was in the country and situated next to a lake with a beautiful view of the surrounding countryside. Like I said, it was actually my friend who chose the restaurant. I didn’t even know about it, although I had heard several people mention its name before. It truly was a spectacular location. Maybe that’s why so many people are enthusiastic about the place.
The food they offer is kind of traditional food or ‘home cooking’ but it’s of a very high standard and superb quality. The menu is varied and includes something for everyone. There are traditional meat dishes, different types of fish and they cater for vegetarians too with plenty of variety available for those who don’t want to eat meat or fish.
I had salmon while my friend had steak. The food was excellent; it's hard to think of anything bad to say about it. It was served quickly and was absolutely delicious. It’s a place I will definitely be recommending to other people now that I’ve been and tried it for myself.
The whole experience was very good - the food, the scenery and of course having an opportunity to catch up with my friend, so there were many reasons that I enjoyed eating there, and it was actually better than I thought it would be – which is always a nice surprise!”

“This is an easy topic for me to talk about because I had a truly memorable journey just a couple of months ago. A group of friends of mine decided to go to Chiang Mai for a few days. There were 10 of us and we decided to take the overnight train. I think it left Bangkok at about 9 pm and, luckily, we had booked the tickets quite a long time in advance because the carriage was completely full. There were lots of different kinds of people travelling with us. There were some foreign students, some Thai families with young kids and even some quite elderly people.
We had each agreed to prepare some food that we could eat and share on the train – a kind of picnic, and everyone brought some really interesting dishes, a mixture of Thai food and more western things like salads and brownies.
But the funny thing was that we had brought far too much food. And we noticed the foreign students looked quite hungry and they had brought huge amounts of beer. So we offered to share our food and they offered to share their beer. There were about 6 of them and it was a great chance to practice our English and make some new friends.
I think we were talking, eating and drinking for about 3 hours. I think we were a little bit noisy especially because we became a little bit drunk and I was really worried that we would get into trouble with the guards. I also felt bad because some of the families had already gone to bed and we were probably disturbing and annoying them.
Eventually, one of my friends said we should also go to bed and we were able to persuade the foreign students to go to bed. I think otherwise they would have been talking and drinking all night! But it was a really great experience and I'm still in touch with some of the students.”
