คำกริยาบางคำต้องตามด้วย Gerund (v.ing) หรือ Infinitive with to (to + verb1) และคำกริยาบางคำก็ตามได้ทั้ง Gerund และ Infinitive แต่มีความหมายแตกต่างกัน ซึ่งต้องระมัดระวังในการใช้

คำกริยาที่ตามหลังด้วย Gerund และ Infinitive แล้วความหมายแตกต่างกัน

Forget

Gerund : forget doing something หมายถึง ลืมว่าได้ทำบางอย่างไปแล้ว
Ex. I forgot doing dishes.
     (ฉันลืมว่าล้างจานไปแล้ว)    

Infinitive : forget to do something หมายถึง ลืมว่าจะทำอะไร
Ex. I forgot to do dishes.
     (ฉันลืมล้างจาน)      

     
Remember

Gerund : remember doing something หมายถึง จำได้ว่าได้ทำบางอย่างไปแล้ว
Ex. I remember sending this email.
     (ฉันจำได้ว่าส่งเมล์นี้ไปแล้ว)

Infinitive : remember to do หมายถึง จำว่าจะทำอะไร
Ex. I remember to send email to him.
     (ฉันจำได้ว่าจะส่งเมล์หาเขา)

Regret

Gerund : regret doing something หมายถึง เสียใจที่ทำบางสิ่งไปแล้ว
Ex. I regret telling a lie.
     (ฉันเสียใจที่พูดโกหก)

Infinitive : regret to do something หมายถึง เสียใจที่จะต้องทำบางอย่าง (เสียใจที่ต้องบอกข่าวร้าย)
Ex. I regret to inform you that we will not be able to accept your offer.
     (ฉันเสียใจที่ต้องแจ้งคุณว่าพวกเราไม่สามารถยอมรับข้อเสนอของคุณได้)  

Try

Gerund : try doing something หมายถึง ลองทำอะไรบางอย่างแล้ว
Ex. I tried moving the table to the other side of the room. But it still didn’t look right.
     (ฉันลองย้ายโต๊ะไปด้านอื่นของห้องแล้ว แต่มันก็ยังไม่โดนอะ)

Infinitive : try to do something หมายถึง พยายามทำอะไรบางอย่าง
Ex. I tried to move the table, but it was too heavy.
     (ฉันพยายามย้ายโต๊ะ แต่มันหนักมาก (ดังนั้นจึงยังไม่ได้ย้าย))    

Stop

Gerund : stop doing something หมายถึง หยุดทำบางอย่าง
Ex. He stopped smoking.
     (เขาเลิกสูบบุหรี่แล้ว)

Infinitive : stop to do something หมายถึง หยุดทำบางสิ่งเพื่อทำอีกสิ่งหนึ่ง
Ex. Tom was thirsty during his speech so he stopped to drink a glass of water.
     (ทอมกระหายน้ำระหว่างการพูดของเขา ดังนั้นเขาจึงหยุด (พูดเพื่อที่จะ) ดื่มน้ำแก้วนึง)

Used to

Gerund : used to doing something หมายถึง คุ้นเคยหรือเคยชินกับการทำบางสิ่ง
Ex. My dad is used to smoking.
     (พ่อของฉันเคยชินกับการสูบบุหรี่ : หมายถึงตอนนี้ก็ยังสูบบุหรี่อยู่)

Infinitive : used to do something หมายถึง เคยทำบางสิ่งในอดีต
Ex. My dad used to smoke.
     (พ่อของฉันเคยสูบบุหรี่ : หมายถึง ตอนนี้ไม่ได้สูบแล้ว)
ข้อควรระวัง : รูป used to + infinitive จะไม่ใช้ verb to be

Mean

Gerund : mean doing something หมายถึง การทำอะไรบางอย่าง
Ex. If you take that job in Saraburi, it will mean traveling for two hours every day.
     (ถ้าคุณได้งานที่สระบุรี ก็จะเดินทาง 2 ชั่วโมงทุกวัน)

Infinitive : mean to do something หมายถึง ตั้งใจทำอะไรบางอย่าง
Ex. I didn’t mean to step on your foot.
     (ฉันไม่ได้ตั้งใจเหยียบเท้าคุณนะ)

go on

Gerund : go on doing something หมายถึง ทำบางสิ่งอย่างต่อเนื่อง
Ex. I told her to stop talking but she went on talking.
     (ฉันบอกให้เธอหยุดพูด แต่เธอยังคงพูดต่อไป)

Infinitive : go on to do something. หมายถึง ทำลำดับต่อไป
Ex. I welcomed Tom and went on to explain him the office rules.
     (ฉันต้อนรับทอมและอธิบายกฎออฟฟิศให้เขาฟัง)

Like

โดยปกติแล้วความหมายไม่ได้แตกต่างกัน เพียงแต่
Gerund : like doing something หมายถึง ชอบทำบางสิ่งในความรู้สึกว่ามันสนุก
Ex. I like taking photos.
     (ฉันชอบการถ่ายภาพ : หมายถึง สนุกกับการถ่ายภาพ)

Infinitive : like to do some thing หมายถึง ชอบทำบางสิ่งในความรู้สึกว่านั่นเป็นกิจวัตร หรือทำจนเป็นนิสัย
Ex. I like to be punctual.
     (ฉันชอบการตรงต่อเวลา หมายถึง การตรงต่อเวลาเป็นสิ่งสำคัญและฉันก็ทำจนเป็นนิสัย)

Need

Gerund : need doing something – need เมื่อตามด้วย Gerund จะให้ความหมายเป็น Passive Voice หมายถึง จำเป็นต้องถูกกระทำ
Ex. Your hands need washing. = Your hands need to be washed./Your hands want washing.
     (มือของคุณจำเป็นต้องถูกล้าง)

Infinitive : need to do something หมายถึง ต้องทำบางสิ่ง
Ex. I need to do laundry.
     (ฉันต้องซักผ้า)
