There is… และ There are... หมายถึง มี... ใช้พูดเพื่อบอกถึงการมีอยู่ของบางสิ่งบางอย่าง ซึ่งหลาย ๆ ครั้งยังมีการใช้สับสนกันอยู่บ้าง เราสรุปหลักการใช้จำง่าย ๆ มาให้นำไปใช้อย่างถูกต้องกันค่ะ

ต้องจำ! 1. There is ใช้กับคำนามนับได้เอกพจน์ (singular countable noun) และคำนามนับไม่ได้ (uncountable noun)
           2. There are ใช้กับคำนามพหูพจน์ (plural noun)

การใช้ There is… – There are…ในประโยคบอกเล่า

     There is + คำนามนับได้เอกพจน์ (singular countable noun) เช่น
     There is a cat on the roof. (มีแมวอยู่บนหลังคา)
     There is a glass of water on the table. (มีน้ำ 1 แก้วบนโต๊ะ)
     There is a woman by the door. (มีผู้หญิงอยู่ใกล้ประตู)
     There is a calendar on the wall. (มีปฏิทินอยู่บนผนัง)

     There is + คำนามนับไม่ได้ (uncountable noun) เช่น
     There is milk in the fridge. (มีนมอยู่ในตู้เย็น)
     There is some sugar on the floor. (มีน้ำตาลอยู่บนพื้น)
     There is some beer in the glass. (มีเบียร์เหลืออยู่บ้างในแก้ว)
รูปย่อ There is… = There’s…

     There are + คำนามพหูพจน์ (plural noun) เช่น
     There are books in my bag. (มีหนังสือ (มากกว่าหนึ่งเล่ม) ในกระเป๋าของฉัน)
     There are two files in my soup. (มีแมลงวันสองตัวในซุปของฉัน)
     There are some children in the house. (มีเด็ก ๆ อยู่ในบ้าน)
     There are many flowers. (มีดอกไม้มากมาย)
     There are apples in the basket. (มีแอปเปิลหลายลูกในตะกร้า)

การใช้ There is… – There are…ในประโยคปฏิเสธ

     There is not… หรือรูปย่อว่า There isn’t… เช่น
     There isn’t a book in my bag. (ไม่มีหนังสืออยู่บนโต๊ะ)
     There isn’t a dog in the room. (ไม่มีหมาอยู่ในห้อง)  
     There isn’t any milk in the fridge. (ไม่มีนมในตู้เย็นเลย)
     There isn’t any water in the swimming pool. (ไม่มีน้ำในสระว่ายน้ำเลย)

     There are not… หรือรูปย่อว่า There aren’t…
     There aren’t two dogs in the room. (ไม่มีหมาสองตัวอยู่ในห้อง)
     There aren’t any children in the park. (ไม่มีเด็ก ๆ อยู่ในสวนเลย)
     There aren’t any books here. (ไม่มีหนังสืออยู่ที่นี่เลย)

ข้อสังเกต : เมื่อต้องการบอกว่าเราไม่มีสิ่งนั้นเลยหรือมีจำนวนเป็นศูนย์ เราจะใช้ There aren’t any… เช่น There aren’t any children in the park. และยังใช้โครงสร้างนี้กับนามนับไม่ได้ด้วย เช่น There isn’t any water in the swimming pool.

การทำเป็นประโยคคำถาม

1. ประโยคคำถาม Yes-No Question : นำ Is / Are มาขึ้นต้นประโยค เช่น
     Q: Is there a cat on the roof?
     A: Yes, there is. / No, there isn’t.

     Q: Are there any children in the park.
     A: Yes, there are. / No, there aren’t.

2. ประโยคคำถามที่ต้องการรู้จำนวนของสิ่งนั้นจะใช้ How many ตามโครงสร้างดังนี้

     How many + คำนามพหูพจน์ (plural noun) + are there + ส่วนเติมเต็มของประโยค (complement) เช่น
     How many cats are there under the bed?
     How many people are there in this room?
